If Cassie had ever wondered how much foam could fit in a tiny cylinder, the answer was: a lot. She’d been mopping herself down in the bathroom for ten minutes but was still finding dollops of it in her hair and clothing.

Finally, she admitted defeat, and walked back out—finding Wes there talking to the caterers, looking like a drowned rat. He gave her a rueful smile as he wiped off his face. “If that’s not a sign this date is officially over, I don’t know what is,” he said. “You’re a mess!”

“So are you!” Cassie protested, reaching up to smooth his hair down.

Wes shook his head. “I guess that’ll teach me to dial back on the big romantic gestures.”

“What are you talking about?” Cassie teased. “There’s nothing more romantic than being soaked in flame retardant foam. It gets me all hot under the collar, every time.”

He laughed, looking more relaxed now. Because clearly they’d needed a torrent of cold, sticky foam to break the ice. “I guess I’ll take you home now,” Wes said, sounding reluctant. “If I look anything like you do, we both need to clean off.”

Cassie knew she was a bedraggled mess, but she suddenly didn’t care. The night was still young, and they were finally acting like themselves: that easy, whip-smart conversation she’d been missing, the air between them shimmering with possibility again.

“I have a better idea,” she said suddenly. “Come with me.”

She led him back outside to her car. “I can drive us,” Wes offered, but she just laughed.

“You really want this mess all over your brand-new BMW?”

He paused. “Good point.”

Cassie grinned and hit the road, feeling lighter than she had all evening. It was dark out now, and the ocean was a smudge of black on the horizon as the warm breeze whipped through the open windows. The sensation reminded her of the night that Wes had driven her home from that disastrous date. How long ago was that now? It must have only been a few weeks, but Cassie couldn’t remember a time before this restless ache in her bloodstream, drawing her closer to him.

Every new taste only made her crave another.

Every minute with him only left her wanting more.

Her heart was pounding with reckless abandon in her chest by the time she turned off the highway and down an unmarked road. The wheels lurched on the bumpy dirt road, and Wes gripped the door for balance. “Umm, Cassie?” he asked, his voice dubious.

“Trust me,” she said, driving on, breathless, until they emerged from the brush by an empty stretch of sand.

Cassie parked by the dunes and climbed out, taking a deep inhale of the salty tang. The ocean was glittering in the moonlight, the beach pale and silent. The nearest houses were half a mile away, hidden in the woods.

They were totally alone.

Cassie’s pulse skipped. She turned to Wes. He was standing there, shadows casting across his face as he waited, hands in his pockets, but his gaze fixed on her. Watching. Waiting for whatever she would do next.
